Photographing Georgie could not have been more fun if she tried. She literally turned up and said, “Oh my God Gaby I am SO excited, I have 14 outfits!” And let me just say, all 14 outfits were incredible. Georgie’s sense of style is impeccable and her infectious energy and positivity just radiates out of her beautiful portraits. Georgie is a talented musician and meditation teacher; you can hear more of Georgie’s beautiful voice here and here.Read More
I first met Carolyn when she came to my Prenatal reTREAT Day, a one day prenatal yoga retreat + blessingway. She radiated positivity and calm, and I loved having her there. Not long after, I was absolutely honoured when she asked me to capture photos of her on the beach at sunrise. Carolyn is a yoga teacher and wanted to get some shots for her business, as well as to celebrate her first pregnancy.
To be perfectly honest, I am not exactly a morning person (my husband would scoff at that sentence) but I truly did have a magical morning with Carolyn. The light was perfect, it was pleasantly warm and Carolyn looked like an absolute goddess. Im so excited for her as she prepares to welcome her first baby any day now, and I cannot wait to hear the news!Read More
"A blessingway is a special ceremony designed to acknowledge, honour, and celebrate a woman's journey into motherhood. Different from a baby shower, a blessingway's main goal is to provide a loving place where an expectant mum can explore the challenges and joys that lie before her as she approaches childbirth and motherhood." - Mother Rising
This past weekend I had the honour of guiding my dear friend's blessingway. Min is expecting her third baby, and when she told me that she had always wanted a blessingway but never had anyone who could plan it for her, I knew that we had to make it happen! Back when I was expecting my first daughter, my friends threw me a beautiful blessingway and it was one of the highlights of my whole pregnancy. I was very hopeful that it would be the same for Min.
I really do believe that when women gather together, magic happens. Not one person present had ever attended a blessingway, and yet everyone was so open hearted and happy to be a part of it. At the end everyone was talking about how amazing it was to slow down, to focus, to make something with their hands, to celebrate their friend and her journey.
I used the book Mother Rising to plan the ceremony, as well as the Mama Blessing Pack from Sisters and the Sea. I would highly recommend both to anyone planning a blessingway! My favourite part of the day: the blush pink string we tied around our wrists in our closing ceremony string ritual, that each of us will leave on our wrist until we hear that Min's baby has arrived.
As a photographer, of course I couldn't let the day go by without snapping some photos. Here are some of my faves...Read More
This little girl totally stole my heart at her mum's maternity session. She was so bubbly and joyful, not to mention very excited to become a big sister soon. I have no doubt that she will make the best big sister, and I'm very excited to see her in action when I go to photograph a newborn session for this family very soon!Read More
It's been really nice to squeeze in a few last family sessions here in Sydney before our big trip to Canada. I met up with this sweet family of 5 at Callan Park recently for some golden hour photos. The kids did so well and, as always, some of my favourite shots are the un-staged ones - the three kiddos chasing each other, jumping into their dad's arms and climbing big rocks. The stuff of childhood.Read More
I decided last year that I really wanted to start photographing weddings. The idea terrified me but I didn't want to let that stop me, so I made it my goal to start second shooting in 2017. So earlier this year, when I got a message from my friend Liv that her friend was looking for a wedding photographer and would I be interested, I practically shouted at her, "YES!"
She put me in touch with Chrissy, and I connected with her and her fiancé from the first moment I met them, bonding over Anne of Green Gables, yoga and the joys and stresses of wedding planning. I knew right away that their wedding would be something special, and I was honoured that they would trust me to capture it.Read More
The end of pregnancy is such a special time. You're on the cusp of a huge change, and it's this balancing act between excitement for the future and enjoyment of the present. My friend Liv is in that place now, due to have her first baby very soon. You can just feel how ready and how excited Liv and Dave are to become parents, and also how much they're relishing this time beforehand. And one day very soon, I'll get the call and I'll make my way over to their place to meet their daughter and take newborn photos. Can't wait!Read More
I am super excited about today's post! If you read my post on organising your personal photos, you'll know that I'm passionate about memory keeping. I joke that our house is like a shrine to ourselves because we have so many of our family photos displayed. I love being surrounded by memories of the most special milestones in our life, from getting married eight (!) years ago to bringing our eldest to the hospital to meet her new sister. I really don't think you can have too many photos on your walls, and some experts even say that family photos boost your child's self esteem and enhance their feeling of belonging.Read More
Over the last couple of years, I've had the privilege of photographing many different yoga teachers. After working with both men and women, new and advanced practitioners, in studios and at outdoor locations, I've picked up a few tips that I thought might be helpful to anyone who is preparing for a yoga photoshoot. So here they are, my top tips to get the most out of your experience:Read More
I recently had the chance to do a quick mini session with Bryony, Co-Director of Egg of the Universe Yoga studio and wholefoods café in Rozelle. Bryony needed a photo for a feature in a new yoga magazine, and as always, I was very excited to walk into a newsagent and see one of my photos in print!Read More
Way back in the day, on my very first trip to Sydney, I found a yoga studio that I loved. I started practising there most weekdays, and Cath was one of my first teachers. I hadn't seen her in quite a while so it was lovely to have the chance to catch up and take photos of her in this beautiful, light-filled studio.Read More
I've known this lovely mum since she was pregnant with her little boy and started coming to my prenatal yoga classes. Both of our pregnancies overlapped and I always loved chatting with her about all things pregnancy, birth, and babies.Read More
It's been on my bucket list for a while now to do a yoga maternity session for someone, so when I got Jemima's email I actually squealed with excitement. When we met up last weekend I was expecting to capture her doing simple standing poses like Warrior 1, 2 etc. Boy was I surprised to find that at 36 weeks pregnant Jemima's practice still includes backbends, inversions, you name it! Photographing her and her baby belly was a dream. I'm so excited for her and her partner and can't wait to hear news of their baby's arrival very soon.Read More
When my friend Stella emailed me to tell me about her new project, Filter Free Yoga, I was immediately excited. Their mission is simple: Inspiration - not intimidation. Honest stories behind the perfectly imperfect humans who practice yoga. Real #filterfree kinda vibes.
To launch the instagram page, Stella and her Filter Free partner organised a yin yoga class with a small group of students. While they practised, I tiptoed around the room taking photos and capturing authentic moments as they happened.
Be sure to check out @filterfreeyoga to read some wonderfully honest and inspiring stories. P.s. I'll be featured there soon with my own story!
Remember my friend Neesha? Well she and I had our baby girls 2 weeks apart. Neesha knew that she was having a girl, but my pregnancy was a gender surprise, so we were pretty excited when I had a baby girl as well! I think we're going to force Oribi and Hazel to be besties, ha.
So anyway, we've been wanting to go back to the location of Neesha's maternity shoot to take mother daughter photos, and last month, it finally happened. I'm so pleased with how these photos turned out. From Neesha's gorgeous styling, to Oribi's adorable pout to the look of love between the two of them... Just so precious.
One of the best things about my job as a yoga teacher is getting to know all of the wonderful women who come to my prenatal classes. This is especially true for the periods of time when I was pregnant and teaching. I got to compare bellies, and share all those milestones right alongside the other mums-to-be. Like this mum, who had her baby a few months after I had Hazel. It was so nice to get to meet her baby, and share stories about our respective bubbas. I'm just so honoured whenever I'm invited in to document these early days; they are so precious.
Late last year I got an email from a fellow yoga teacher; she was opening up a new yoga studio and needed photos for their website. I think it was the last shoot I did before going on maternity leave, and I'm so glad I squeezed it in. These guys are just awesome. It turned out that their team was 75% Canadian, so it was nice to hang out and chat with people who sound like me :)
They were opening the very next day, and it looked amazing. There was obviously so much love and hard work being poured into their studio, not to mention excitement! You can find more details about Modo Yoga Sydney here.
I first met Emily through yoga world many years ago so I was excited when she got in touch to get some headshots done. Emily is an awesome yoga and meditation teacher with a website that you can find here. She was also recently interviewed on the Slow Home podcast about her daily meditation practise. It's a great listen :)
Emily and I did a mini session (hence the smaller number of photos), which is a great option for anyone needing just a handful of new photographs. Perfect for yoga teachers and other natural health practitioners. If you're interested in booking a mini session, shoot me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org
This is my friend Neesha. Her due date is 2 days before mine, and it's been so great having a good friend at the exact same stage of pregnancy as me. Last month we decided to do an impromptu maternity session so we headed to Centennial Park at golden hour with her little boy. I'm in love with these photos - the belly, the floral crown, the gorgeous location... it all just came together to create the perfect maternity session.
I'm finally getting around to catching up on blogging my latest shoots, and today I bring you, another yoga session! What can I say? I just love yoga photography. These photos were taken early on a winter morning at the beach. It was freezing but Philippa did such a good job of modelling that you can't even tell how cold it was. If you'd like to find out more about Philippa, you can find her website here.
